Design procedure and optimisation methodology of permanent magnet synchronous machines with direct slot cooling for aviation electrification

Abstract Electric machines are widely employed in a variety of sectors, including automotive and aerospace industry. With the rising trend towards electrification aviation, electric with increased power density efficiency becoming key enabling technologies, requiring development innovative design procedures. In this study, preliminary procedure for Surface Mounted Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines (SPMSMs) intensively cooled by means oil channels placed stator slots is proposed. The analytical derivation SPMSM sizing equations, sub‐domain model optimisation algorithm will be reported detail. Indeed, both electromagnetic thermal equations machine considered tool. As result, latter allows to capture variation not only terms mechanical demands, such as speed, but also coolant characteristics, can effectively perform trade‐off studies at stage. proposed tool used specific case study: high‐speed an hydraulic actuator. accuracy validated different parameters comparing results experimental measurements performed on existing 8‐pole 9‐slot prototype SPMSM.
